Being Resolute with Resolutions

Be resolute with your resolution. Following these steps – along with daily accountability – will assist with your accomplishment of a goal. Refuse to fail. Relentlessly drive your goal to completion.

Happy New Year! With the dawn of 2017 comes the flurry of new resolutions, goals, dreams, initiatives; and too often falling short of what we set out to accomplish. Assuming you’ve set goals you really desire; lets look at some strategies for staying on track.

SMART Goals: Start with the phrasing of the goal first. SMART is the acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Really Desired, and Time Bound. Your goal should be a SMART Goal. “I’d like to lose some weight.” is not a SMART Goal. A better way to set out your path is to write down “By March 31st, 2017 my weight will be _______”.

Noteworthy: Write your goals down. Great ideas are a bit like slippery fish. If you don’t gaff them with a pen and paper, they’re likely to slip away from you and swim away. Your goals should be written.

Action Steps: In order to meet your goal, you’ll need to set out some activities designed to get you to the finish line. I prefer action steps written at the granular level rather than general actions. “Work out” might be an general action step for losing weight but it isn’t very likely to hold you accountable. Set out all of the activities you need to do in order to accomplish your goal. No action step is too small.

Massive, determined, daily action: You have to be able to take action steps every day. The more high value actions you take daily, the more likely your goal will be accomplished. Don’t put off until tomorrow what will move your goals forward today.

Accountability: Most desired goals fail because it is difficult to stay the course. Daily accountability is tough. Life happens. You get busy being busy and the result is to set the goal and action steps aside. You must guard against putting off what you really desire. Check your goals and action steps twice daily. Keep a journal of how you spend your time. State or write daily affirmations. Tell as many supportive people as possible about your goal and ask them to check in with you often. Get an accountability partner with a shared goal and inspire each other. Use visualization daily.

Be resolute with your resolution. Following these steps – along with daily accountability – will assist with your accomplishment of a goal. Refuse to fail. Relentlessly drive your goal to completion.
