The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business people. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our interviewee for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
David Kelly
What is your job role?
CEO — The Growth Solutions Team
Tell us about your company?
Consulting firm assisting businesses in doubling sales, profit, and increasing cash flow
What do you love most about your job?
Seeing the impact on our small business segment. When those small firms make strides in profitability, it is life changing for the owner. Seeing that on a daily basis is the most rewarding part of what we do.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I enjoy what we do. I love tackling the problems our clients run into. But I also love hearing about the wins.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
Our team is the best in the business. They’ve all been assembled because of specific expertise our clients need. Expertise, I don’t have. So I’m always amazed by the caliber of people we’ve been able to attract. And I’m even more inspired when they can take difficult situations or concepts and make it easy for the client (or me).
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We have several huddles per week. We discuss our initiatives and client programs but we also keep it light and have some fun when we meet either via phone or in a more formal meeting. My team made a bingo game out of many of the common “David isms” I use when speaking to businesses or professional groups. That’s pretty funny. Because we have perspective, after emergencies have passed and been resolved, some of our client stories are fairly amusing too. We should write a tell-all book. But we won’t
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Getting clients to follow our guidance.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
ALWAYS focus some part of your day on the most important, highest value areas of focus to achieve your initiatives. No matter how busy, how tired, how overwhelmed you might get… you have to take some high-value action every day. Even if it’s only one thing.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Figure out how to make an impact — rather than just providing advice. Clients don’t always act on advice so you need to develop means and methods to make an impact for clients even if they ignore everything you say (because that definitely happens).
